Dementia Care Services

Dementia Care Staff at The Vicarage

Residents are assessed on admission, and plans of care and support are created to meet their individual needs.  Regular assessments ensure that each resident continues to receive personalized care.

Nurse-Practitioner Karen Guiou is on call always and makes monthly visits to oversee the health and medical needs of each resident

Qualified personal care staff are on duty 24/7. Our staff receive biweekly in-services on residents, as well as readings on “person centered care” and advanced dementia care training through this site Social care institute for excellence, as well as The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America and The Alzheimer’s Association.

We offer three home cooked meals, as well as snacks.  The meal plans incorporate residents’ food preferences and favorite recipes.  Local seafood is offered, including fresh lobster from Casco Bay. Traditional meals are presented during holidays such as Christmas and Easter. Residents’ families often attend these meals with their loved ones. Diabetic and vegetarian meals are also available. We also cater to residents’ food restrictions because of religious, cultural or other reasons. We make notes of any food dislikes and accommodate.  If desired, the resident may help with the meal preparation.  It is not uncommon to visit The Vicarage and find staff and residents working together on delicious deserts.

Social interaction throughout each day:  Residents have the opportunity to preserve and strengthen their sense of dignity and self-esteem by engaging in social interactions with staff and other residents.

Recreational activities range from nature walks along the beautiful lane or Oceanside, to movies and games.  Music performances and outings are offered. Individualized activities are created to satisfy the interests of each resident. Every year, The Vicarage holds a special holiday party  for family and friends to celebrate with their loved ones.  Great food and live entertainment accompany the festivities.

Pet therapy is offered at all times. The benefits of pet therapy include lowering anxiety and stress, encouraging communication, improving mood, and lowering blood pressure.  Currently, two dogs and a couple of cats live at The Vicarage.

Staff provide support with residents’ personal care, encouraging as much independence as possible.  ADL support includes, but is not limited to, dressing, bathing, toileting, managing medication, eating, ambulation assistance, and incontinence management.  Plans of support are created around the individual needs of each resident.

Creating a home environment, where residents can age in place has been our philosophy since opening our doors. We are a true “aging-in-place” home . There are no more transitions.  Residents can stay at The Vicarage throughout their life. As the disease progresses, residents are not required to move to another location.

At The Vicarage, we specialize in long-term dementia care.  Our services are based on individual need.  Please contact us with any further questions you may have concerning our services.
